Arkansas Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northeastern Arkansas expect a high of 78 with a low of 64 and partly to mostly cloudy skies with S winds at 25 to 35 mph. The high on Saturday is expected to be 70 with a low of 44 and cloudy skies with an occasional rain shower with SW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 59 on Sunday with a low of 38 and partly cloudy skies with NW winds at 10 to 20 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

CACHE RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE- COTTON PLANT, AR

Reported on 3-12 that they are still seeing ok numbers of young Snow geese around the area in pockets. Staff stated that they are starting to move north though. Staff finished by saying that they expect the geese that are still around to start moving out within the next week or so.

HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DARDANELLE, AR

Reported on 3-5 that they are seeing decent numbers of juvie Snow geese around the area yet. Staff stated that the younger birds don’t seem to be in a big rush to head north at this point.

Jeremy reported on 3-13 that they wrapped up their spring Snow goose hunting in Arkansas late last week. Jeremy stated that they still had decent hunting when they called it quits, but the majority of the birds had left the state.

Illinois Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Illinois expect a high of 83 with a low of 61 and partly cloudy skies with a SSE wind at 20 to 30 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 70 with a low of 39 and cloudy skies with occasional rain showers with SSW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 52 on Sunday with a low of 34 and partly cloudy skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

UNION COUNTY STATE WILDLIFE AREA – JONESBORO, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-12 that the big pushes are now passed the area. Staff stated that they could still see a few small flocks pass through, but overall, the spring Snow goose migration has now passed the area.

HORSESHOE LAKE STATE REFUGE – MILLER CITY, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-12 that they are pretty much wrapped up in seeing Snow geese this spring. Staff stated that they are still seeing a few small flocks but no real big numbers.

CARLYLE LAKE WILDLIFE REFUGE – VANDALIA, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-5 that in the most recent survey that was conducted there were 13,000 Snow geese in the area. Staff stated that the migration has been moving on quite well this spring with both regular migration days and reverse migration days with the changes in weather.

Missouri Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northwestern Missouri expect a high of 76 with a low of 39 and windy with scattered thunderstorms with S winds at 25 to 35 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 51 with a low of 27 and cloudy skies and NW winds at 20 to 30 mph. Expect a high of 58 on Sunday with a low of 39 and sunny skies and WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – MOUND CITY, MO

Reported on 3-12 that in the most recent survey conducted on 3-11 there were 878,170 Snow geese on the refuge at the time of the count. Up from 54,080 in the previous survey. Staff stated that with warmer temperatures, birds are grouped up and migrating rapidly over the last week. Staff finished by saying that the birds are moving quickly now.

SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAINSVILLE, MO

Reported on 3-5 that they are again starting to see strong numbers of Snow geese work into and through the area. Staff stated that they haven’t conducted a survey, but they estimate there to be 140,000 plus around right now. Staff finished by saying that they know there are a lot yet to come as well.

GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA – MIAMI, MO

Reported on 3-5 that in their most recent count on the refuge there were 5,000 Snow geese on the refuge at the time of the count. Staff stated that there are roughly 10,000 around the area with many more moving through the area daily.

Larry reported on 3-13 that the birds are moving quickly to the north. Larry stated that they are only hunting in Nebraska right now and they don’t know how much longer.

Scott reported on 3-12 that it is wrapping up rather quickly right now. He stated that there are good huntable birds showing up now that want to decoy nice! Scott finished by saying that they have also seen the first few flocks of pelicans which usually means the spring snow goose season is wrapping up.

Nebraska Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In central Nebraska expect a high of 71 with a low of 34 and partly cloudy skies with SSE winds at 10 to 20 mph. On Saturday expect a high of 53 with a low of 26 and partly cloudy skies and NNW winds at 25 to 35 mph. Expect a high of 64 on Sunday with a low of 38 and mostly sunny skies with WSW winds at 10 to 20 mph.

KEARNEY GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE- KEARNEY, NE

Reported on 3-12 that they are seeing really good numbers work into the area. Staff stated that there is some snow expected to the north so they could see some birds coming back down that have already pushed through.

OGALLALA GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – OGALLALA, NE

Reported on 3-12 that they have strong numbers in the area right now. Staff stated that the birds are moving quickly to the north though. Staff finished by saying that they might see a bit of a reverse migration this weekend, but the mass will work back north quickly.

NORFORK GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – NORFORK, NE

Reported on 3-5 that they are seeing good numbers for the lead edge of the migration. Staff stated that they have seen flocks pushing through for over a week so far but haven’t seen a big push yet. Staff finished by saying that if the weather continues to stay warm and dry then the birds will keep pushing north.

South Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in East central South Dakota expect a high of 67 with a low of 23 and partly cloudy skies with SE winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 34 with a low of 14 and windy conditions and a 80% chance of snow with NW winds at 25 to 35 mph. Expect a high of 39 on Sunday with a low of 24 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 5 to 10 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – ABERDEEN, SD

Reported on 3-12 that they are starting to see the big lead edge of the snow goose migration. Staff stated birds are moving quickly, but there is cold and snow expected this weekend and that could cause them to head back to the south for a couple of days.

HURON WETLAND DISTRICT – CENTRAL, SD

Staff reported on 3-5 that they are seeing some adult flocks of snow geese work through the area. Staff stated that the weather looks promising for good migration to start happening early next week.

MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT – SOUTH EAST, SD

Reported on 3-12 that they are loaded with Snow geese right now. Staff stated that early this week they saw huge flocks heading north. Staff finished by saying that they feel they only have about a week left of big numbers.

Nick reported on 3-13 that there was heavy migration mid-week to central and northern South Dakota. He stated that the birds were pushing hard and there was no snow to stop them. Nick finished by saying that he feels this weekend’s storm is going to push a lot of the birds back to the south though.

Trevor reported on 3-13 that early this week there were massive migration days into South Dakota. He stated that there are large concentrations of Snow geese in the northern parts of the state and some even making it into North Dakota. Trevor finished by saying that this weekend’s storm could cause a shake up the migration, but in the next two weeks there should be great hunting across the state of South Dakota.

North Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in North central North Dakota expect a high of 45 and a low of 15 with cloudy skies and NNE winds at 15 to 25 mph. Saturdays high is expected to be 25 with a low of 9 and cloudy skies with NW winds at 25 to 35 mph. Expect a high of 29 on Sunday with a low of 17 and mainly sunny skies with W winds at 5 to 10 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

TEWAUKON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAYUGA, ND

Reported on 3-12 that they are seeing the lead edge of the Snow goose migration. Staff stated that they saw the first flocks early this week. Staff finished by saying that they feel the birds they have are going to head back south with the storms they are expected to get.

ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – PINGREE, ND

Reported on 3-12 that they have not seen any Snow geese directly in the area but have heard reports of Snow geese making it into the state. Staff stated that with the weather expected this weekend it’ll be about another week before they expect to see snow geese in the area.

LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DEVILS LAKE, ND

Reported on 3-12 that they haven’t seen any Snow geese make it this far north yet. Staff stated that they still have a lot of ice, but the snow is melting rather quickly. Staff finished by saying that they are expecting one more winter blast this weekend, then they could possibly see the migration at some point late next week.

Eric finished by saying that they are expecting cold temps and about 3 inches of snow this weekend, so he figures they are still about a week out from seeing light geese move into the area.

Canada Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Saskatchewan expect a high of 18 with a low of 0 and cloudy skies with NW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 16 with a low of -3 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph. Expect a high of 20 on Sunday with a low of 5 and mostly cloudy skies with ESE winds at 5 to 10 mph.

On Friday in southern Manitoba expect a high of 42 a low of 18 and overcast skies with NNE winds at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 21 with a low of 10 and scattered snow showers and NW winds at 10 to 20 mph. Expect a high of 25 on Sunday with a low of 10 and partly cloudy skies with WNW winds at 5 to 10 mph.

CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE REPORTS

WEYBURN FIELD OFFICE – WEYBURN, SK

Reported on 3-12 that they haven’t seen any Snow geese make it across the border yet. Staff stated that they feel it will be a few more weeks until they see some due to the cold front and winter storms still coming through.

LAST MTN LAKE FIELD OFFICE – LAST MTN LAKE REGION

Reported on 3-12 that they haven’t seen any Snow geese in the area yet. Staff did say that they have heard reports of the lead edge making it close to North Dakota, so barring a big winter storm it will be a few weeks before they reach Canada.

BOISSEVAIN FIELD OFFICE – BOISSEVAIN, MANITOBA

Reported on 3-12 that they haven’t seen any migration yet. Staff stated that they are hearing some reports of Canada geese making into the area. Staff finished by saying it’ll be a couple of weeks before they start to see light geese crossing the border.
