Arkansas Spring Snow Goose Report
WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK
On Friday expect a high of 68 with a low of 49 and partly cloudy conditions with northwest winds at 10 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 72 with a low of 52 under mostly sunny skies and light southwest winds at 8 mph. Expect a high of 75 on Sunday with a low of 55 and partly cloudy conditions with south winds at 12 mph.

CACHE RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE- COTTON PLANT, AR
The migration is over in their area. Snows hung around early but they didn’t stick around too long after they had a warmup.
HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DARDANELLE, AR
Holla Bend is over with the migration. After the birds got held up early they pushed through pretty quick other than some remaining juvies.

Gabe reported on 3/11 that they have packed it up for the year. He stated that there are still some small numbers of Snow geese hanging around in Northeast Arkansas but very few groups. Gabe also reported that there are not huntable numbers anymore in Southern Illinois. Gabe finished by saying that overall, their spring season was very successful!

He stated that it was great spring migration through Northeast Arkansas with a lot of birds willing to play nicely and a really good Juvie count in the areas they were in. Jeremy finished by saying that their groups were able to bag 2,491 Snow geese during the time they hunted this spring.

Snow geese have pushed out of their area and the migration is done in their area.
FLINT HILLS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – EAST-CENTRAL KANSAS (NEAR HARTFORD)
The migration is well past their area and don’t expect to see much of any more birds.
CHEYENNE BOTTOMS / QUIVIRA WETLAND COMPLEX – CENTRAL KANSAS
The migration is past their area and it should be all done for Snow geese this spring.

He stated that they had their last hunt on March 14, between wind and weather issues it made for some tough hunting this year. Clay finished by saying ups and downs with weather certainly caused issues with the migration and consistency overall.

Cameron reported on 3/11 that the majority of birds have now moved further north with the nicer weather, southerly winds, and lack of snow to the north. Cameron stated that they still have a couple of small pockets around the area, but not big numbers at all. Cameron finished by saying that they have finished up hunting for the spring and they are already looking forward to chasing more birds in the fall.

The refuge has had Snows push out of their area and appears to be done for the year.
SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAINSVILLE, MO
The migration is now past Swan Lake and they don’t expect to see any more Snow geese to show up.
GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA – MIAMI, MO
The Snow goose migration is all done around Grand Pass and surrounding areas.

He stated that it has been a really good spring to this point and they had really good success until they wrapped up their seasons in all of their locations. Scott stated that there are still around 100,000 Snow geese still in the area, but that number continues to drop daily. Scott finished by saying that they plan to pick the last field up this weekend.

He stated that there are still a lot of birds in the area and hunting has been above average most days. Saturday’s high is expected to be 62 with a low of 40 under mostly sunny skies and southeast winds at 10 mph. Expect a high of 67 on Sunday with a low of 44 and partly cloudy conditions with south winds at 14 mph.

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – ABERDEEN, SD
Northern South Dakota is still seeing very light activity. Any birds in the area are moving through rather than settling in. They appear to be done for the season outside of the last couple flocks of juvies.
HURON WETLAND DISTRICT – CENTRAL, SD
Central South Dakota appear to be done for the season outside of a few late flocks. All the Snows are north of them at this point.
MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT – SOUTH EAST, SD
Southeast South Dakota is all done for this season. There isn’t expected to be much of any more Snows for the season.

TEWAUKON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAYUGA, ND
Tewaukon is now holding good numbers of Snow geese but they are trying to push north hard. Birds are actively feeding and roosting, with strong daytime movement patterns. This area appears to be around peak migration.
ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – PINGREE, ND
Arrowwood is experiencing a push of migration activity, with rapidly increasing numbers across the refuge. Wetland conditions are supporting large roosts, and birds are dispersing widely to feed. Movement is constant, with waves of birds cycling through daily. This area is near peak conditions.
LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DEVILS LAKE, ND
The Devils Lake region is holding significant numbers of snow geese, with strong concentrations building across the landscape. Birds are staging heavily and utilizing both wetlands and agricultural fields. Activity levels are high, with consistent flight lines and feeding patterns. This region is at or near peak migration intensity.

Weyburn Field Office – Weyburn, SK:
The leading edge of the migration has now reached southern Saskatchewan, with the first notable waves of snow geese arriving. Birds are beginning to establish early staging patterns as habitat continues to open. Movement is increasing steadily with each passing day.
LAST MTN LAKE FIELD OFFICE – LAST MTN LAKE REGION
Early migration activity is underway, with birds starting to filter into available open water. As ice recedes, the area is becoming more attractive for staging flocks. Numbers are expected to build quickly as the main body pushes north.
BOISSEVAIN FIELD OFFICE – BOISSEVAIN, MANITOBA
Southern Manitoba is seeing initial arrivals, with small groups appearing across the region. These early migrants are testing available habitat as conditions improve. A larger push is expected to follow in short order.

Brent reported on 4/9 that they have been seeing fairly decent numbers of Snow geese already. He stated that they are seeing good numbers just south of Saskatoon. Brent also reported that the Saskatoon area did get a blizzard in the middle of this week and that seems to be about where the snow line currently is. Brent finished by saying that North and East of Saskatoon is still very wintery, but west of Saskatoon there is little snow and little sheet water.
