Arkansas Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northeastern Arkansas expect a high of 65 with a low of 42 and partly cloudy skies with SSW winds at 15 to 25 mph. The high on Saturday is expected to be 72 with a low of 57 and sunny skies with SSE winds at 5 to 10 mph. Expect a high of 69 on Sunday with a low of 43 and scattered thunderstorms with SW winds at 15 to 25 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

CACHE RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE- COTTON PLANT, AR

Reported on 3-12 that they are still seeing ok numbers of young Snow geese around the area in pockets. Staff stated that they are starting to move north though. Staff finished by saying that they expect the geese that are still around to start moving out within the next week or so.

HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DARDANELLE, AR

Reported on 3-5 that they are seeing decent numbers of juvie Snow geese around the area yet. Staff stated that the younger birds don’t seem to be in a big rush to head north at this point.

Jeremy reported on 3-13 that they wrapped up their spring Snow goose hunting in Arkansas late last week. Jeremy stated that they still had decent hunting when they called it quits, but the majority of the birds had left the state.

Illinois Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Illinois expect a high of 61 with a low of 40 and partly cloudy skies with a SSW wind at 15 to 25 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 66 with a low of 47 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 5 to 10 mph. Expect a high of 64 on Sunday with a low of 39 and thunderstorms with SSW winds at 10 to 20 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

UNION COUNTY STATE WILDLIFE AREA – JONESBORO, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-12 that the big pushes are now passed the area. Staff stated that they could still see a few small flocks pass through, but overall, the spring Snow goose migration has now passed the area.

HORSESHOE LAKE STATE REFUGE – MILLER CITY, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-12 that they are pretty much wrapped up in seeing Snow geese this spring. Staff stated that they are still seeing a few small flocks but no real big numbers.

CARLYLE LAKE WILDLIFE REFUGE – VANDALIA, ILLINOIS

Reported on 3-5 that in the most recent survey that was conducted there were 13,000 Snow geese in the area. Staff stated that the migration has been moving on quite well this spring with both regular migration days and reverse migration days with the changes in weather.

Missouri Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In northwestern Missouri expect a high of 55 with a low of 37 and cloudy skies with ENE winds at 10 to 15 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 51 with a low of 28 and mostly cloudy skies and N winds at 15 to 25 mph. Expect a high of 59 on Sunday with a low of 30 and partly cloudy skies and NW winds at 5 to 10 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – MOUND CITY, MO

Reported on 4-2 that in the most recent survey conducted on 3-25 there were 8,095 Snow geese on the refuge at the time of the count. Up from 7,166 in the previous survey. Staff stated that with the warmer temperatures birds are grouped up and headed north rapidly over the last week. Staff finished by saying that the birds are moving quickly now.

SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAINSVILLE, MO

Reported on 3-19 that they are nearing the end of the migration. Staff stated that they lost the majority of birds that were in the area over the last week. Staff finished by saying that they are still seeing some flocks coming from the south, but they are few and far between now.

GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA – MIAMI, MO

Reported on 3-26 that in their most recent count on the refuge there were 5,000 Snow geese on the refuge at the time of the count. Staff stated that there are roughly 10,000 around the area with many more moving through the area daily. Staff finished by saying that these birds are moving quickly to the north now.

Scott reported on 4-3 that they are still seeing a few Snow geese hanging around the area. He stated that there are only 3,000 to 5,000 around the area. Scott finished by saying that they are all done and are already preparing for fall!

Nebraska Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

In central Nebraska, expect a high of 48 with a low of 26 and morning showers with NNE winds at 10 to 20 mph. On Saturday expect a high of 51 with a low of 24 and partly cloudy skies and N winds at 15 to 25 mph. Expect a high of 63 on Sunday with a low of 29 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph.

KEARNEY GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE- KEARNEY, NE

Reported on 4-2 that they are nearing the end of the spring migration. Staff stated that they still have birds working in the area, but the big masses are now well north of them.

OGALLALA GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – OGALLALA, NE

Reported on 4-2 that they are still seeing a few Snow geese in the area, but the majority are now well to the north of the area. Staff stated that they are still seeing some flocks of young birds coming through the area.

NORFORK GAME FISH AND PARKS OFFICE – NORFORK, NE

Reported on 3-26 that they are all but wrapped up with the spring migration. Staff stated that overall, it was a very consistent spring migration this year.

South Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in East central South Dakota expect a high of 66 with a low of 48 and sunny skies with S winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 43 with a low of 21 and sunny skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph. Expect a high of 66 on Sunday with a low of 36 and partly cloudy skies with NW winds at 25 to 35 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – ABERDEEN, SD

Reported on 4-10 that the spring migration is pretty much wrapped up this spring. Staff stated that they are still seeing some Snow geese work through the area, but it is limited.

HURON WETLAND DISTRICT – CENTRAL, SD

Staff reported on 4-10 that they are not seeing much for Snow geese in the area anymore. Staff stated that they still have an occasional flock that comes through, but the majority of the migration is now past them.

MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT – SOUTH EAST, SD

Reported on 4-10 that the spring Snow goose migration has come to an end. Staff stated that there is still a random flock or two that moves through the area, but the big masses are now well to the north.

Nick reported on 3-13 that there was heavy migration mid-week to central and northern South Dakota. He stated that the birds were pushing hard and there was no snow to stop them. Nick finished by saying that he feels this weekend’s storm is going to push a lot of the birds back to the south though.

Trevor reported on 4-3 that it is very spotty. He stated that most birds were north of the storm and had no reason to come back south. Trevor also reported that permanent spread hunting is all but over. Trevor finished by saying that if you can find feeds, that’s the name of the game now.

North Dakota Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in North central North Dakota expect a high of 64 and a low of 43 with partly cloudy skies and S winds at 15 to 25 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 65 with a low of 40 and cloudy skies with NNE winds at 5 to 10 mph. Expect a high of 47 on Sunday with a low of 33 and a 80% chance of rain with NNE winds at 10 to 15 mph.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

TEWAUKON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAYUGA, ND

Reported on 4-11 that they have good numbers of Snow geese moving through the area. Staff stated that the migration is moving quickly, and birds are moving out faster than they are moving in.

ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – PINGREE, ND

Reported on 4-10 that the migration is pushing hard. Staff stated that they started seeing more flocks last week and they are pushing hard to the north with little holding them back.

LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DEVILS LAKE, ND

Reported on 4-2 that they have been seeing Snow geese for over a week now. Staff stated that they experienced another winter blast which slowed things down a little. Staff finished by saying that when the weather breaks it’ll be game on.

Canada Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday in southern Saskatchewan expect a high of 64 with a low of 31 and sunny skies with W winds at 15 to 25 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 60 with a low of 34 and mainly sunny skies with WNW winds at 10 to 15 mph. Expect a high of 48 on Sunday with a low of 27 and cloudy skies with NNW winds at 10 to 20 mph.

On Friday in southern Manitoba expect a high of 62 a low of 42 and cloudy skies with S winds at 10 to 20 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 66 with a low of 37 and partly cloudy skies and light and variable winds. Expect a high of 47 on Sunday with a low of 33 and mostly cloudy skies with NNE winds at 5 to 10 mph.

CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE REPORTS

WEYBURN FIELD OFFICE – WEYBURN, SK

Reported on 4-10 that they migration is now in full swing. Staff stated that they started seeing flocks last weekend and it has been a consistent push since then.

LAST MTN LAKE FIELD OFFICE – LAST MTN LAKE REGION

Reported on 4-10 that they saw the first flocks of Snow geese early last week. Staff stated that they are expecting some winter weather this weekend and that’ll halt the migration. Staff finished by saying that the birds are expected to push hard after that.

BOISSEVAIN FIELD OFFICE – BOISSEVAIN, MANITOBA

Reported on 4-10 that the migration is on! Staff stated that birds are flying high and pushing north. Staff stated that the birds are pushing north quickly and not staying around long.

Brent reported on 4-11 that spring came on full bore this past week. He stated that there have been steady streams of birds heading north all week in west central Saskatchewan. Brent finished by saying that they aren’t seeing many on the ground though.

LOCATION: Weyburn Area, Saskatchewan
REPORTER: Dave Edgerton

Dave reported on 4-10, stating the birds have been hanging in his area until yesterday. He mentioned the last large flock he has seen was 5 miles north of Weyburn and now since they have started to warm up they have moved north. Dave also stated the snowline is about 150km north of him and he suspects the birds will be tight on the snow line. Dave finished by saying the flocks in the area have and fed hard and would jump to the next and they’re planning on hunting again tonight and this weekend. He’s worried that the main migration has rolled over them.
