Arkansas Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday expect a high of 69 with a low of 44 and sunshine with south winds at 10 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 72 with a low of 45 and sunny skies. Expect a high of 63 on Sunday with breezy conditions and partly sunny skies.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

CACHE RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE- COTTON PLANT, AR

Snow geese continue using the refuge as a critical roosting hub, piling into shallow flooded timber edges and sheet water areas overnight before fanning out at first light. Large flocks are lifting mid-morning to feed in harvested rice and soybean fields, then returning late afternoon. There is a strong presence of juvies. With warming temperatures accelerating habitat availability to the north, birds are feeding aggressively and staging briefly before pushing onward.

HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – DARDANELLE, AR

Holla Bend remains loaded with light geese using open water units for midday loafing and security. Morning and evening flight windows have been strong as birds trade between refuge water and nearby agricultural ground. As daylight length increases and southerly winds persist, geese are showing more directional movement rather than winter loafing behavior. Expect continued turnover as new birds filter in from southern Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta.

Missouri Spring Snow Goose Report

WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

On Friday expect a high of 74 with a low of 36 and mostly sunny skies with south winds at 14 mph. Saturday’s high is expected to be 56 with a low of 24 and sunshine. Expect a high of 39 on Sunday with breezy and colder conditions.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SQUAW CREEK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – MOUND CITY, MO

The February 24 survey documented 755,550 Snow geese currently staged on and around the refuge, confirming Loess Bluffs as the undisputed epicenter of the Central Flyway migration at this moment. Massive morning lifts are spilling across northwest Missouri before birds funnel back into the refuge pools throughout the afternoon. Feeding pressure remains intense in surrounding agricultural fields as geese fuel heavily ahead of the next northward surge. With ideal late-February weather windows, turnover is expected — but numbers remain extremely strong.

SWAN LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – CAINSVILLE, MO

Swan Lake is seeing extremely strong light goose activity, particularly on managed wetland units with reliable sheet water. Birds are using the refuge primarily as a loafing and roost site before feeding on adjacent row crop fields. Increased daily flight chatter suggests new arrivals mixing with departing flocks. Conditions remain favorable for continued staging through the next week.

GRAND PASS CONSERVATION AREA – MIAMI, MO

Grand Pass continues to hold migrating flocks using shallow water pools and flooded crop fields. Geese are cycling predictably between roost and feed, with visible directional movement on strong south winds. As Missouri sits squarely in the migration corridor, bird numbers are dynamic — rising and falling with each weather system. Overall activity remains solid and consistent.

REFUGE / WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA ACTIVITY

SAND LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – ABERDEEN, SD

Early waves of snow geese are beginning to touch down on open basins within the refuge. Birds are cautious and transient, using sheet water briefly before moving to surrounding feed fields. While concentrations are still light, the presence of new arrivals signals the northern edge of the advancing front. Warmer stretches will rapidly increase staging potential.

HURON WETLAND DISTRICT – CENTRAL, SD

Wetlands are slowly opening, allowing scattered flocks to rest and refuel. Most birds are often staging for short periods but there’s a noticeable presence. Habitat conditions will determine whether the district becomes a major holding area in early March.

MADISON COUNTRY WETLAND DISTRICT – SOUTH EAST, SD

Smaller flocks are using available water and adjacent ag fields. Movement remains steady but not concentrated. The district sits poised to receive heavier numbers once Nebraska birds advance more aggressively.
